¡Doce Dias! . . . 12 Days!

Mas del viaje . . .More About the Trip

This trip, or a trip like this has been my dream ever since the
eight graders from two years ago went on a trip similar to ours. I knew after hearing about their trip that I wanted to do a similar trip.  And now we have, the only differences between the two trips are the location and amount of people. ( The other eighth graders went to the NPH orphanage in Tegulcigalpa, while we are going to NPH Nicaragua, and also, they had a bigger group, not just two students and a chaperone).
After their trip, they led a community meeting to tell us about the trip. They talked about what they did in Tegulcigalpa and in the orphanage, the people they met and spoke with (specifically the kids at the orphanage and what they did with them) and also the experience of being in a country with a completely different culture, and speaking a different language. The eighth graders had nothing but good things to say about the kids, saying that they were so energetic and friendly. And how they loved to "ham it up" for the camera. And just to add on to all of that, the trip was a service trip, something very important to the community of my school and also to me. To me, as a sixth grader, and still now, it sounded like the greatest thing ever. At the beginning of sixth grade, I wasn't exactly excited about taking spanish as a language, I had hoped to continue with French but wasn't able to. Although, after just a month of spanish, maybe even less, I loved it! So the possibility of a trip where you speak spanish
all day long and get to talk and play with these awesome and energetic kids, sign me up! After that, I immediately started to save my babysitting money (by now I have enough to pay for my
plane tickets!)
So, then I waited for my turn and my parents, classmates and I began the planning. But it turned out to be a lot harder than I thought, there were so many things that we had to plan carefully because there could be liabilities. But those were nothing compared to the problems we had with making sure we had enough chaperones and people who wouldn't back out. And this was especially hard considering we have only sixteen kids in the grade! And then, on top of all of that, we had the problem of which orphange we were going to go to. Originally we planned to go to the NPH orphanage in Tegucigalpa, because we knew the people there and had gone before. But it just didn't work out. So, my mom and dad started calling around and trying to contact other people.
And that's how we came to Osman and NPH Nicaragua. I am very glad that we did! Osman has been great and told us everything we need to know. He has also reminded me of the reasons I originally wanted to participate in a trip like this with his stories of everyone at the orphanage.

Our Trip, Nuestro Viaje

This April, from the eleventh to the seventeenth, my Dad, one of my classmates and I will be on a service trip in Nicaragua. While in Nicaragua, we will be volunteering at the NPH (Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos) Orphanage, which is twenty miles away from the capital of Managua. At the orpahage,we will help the younger kids with math, play with them after their classes, put in a garden (using the excellent skills we have learned from Senorita Asbeld) and much, much more! We hope to learn more about Nicaraguan culture and lifestyle, while also speaking in Spanish. And of course we will have a great time!

Today, the countdown begins. Fifteen days until the eleventh of April!
